Tooth Extraction

What exactly is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction refers to a total removal of one or more of your natural teeth. Extractions are one of the most common dental surgeries in the field. They help to remove teeth that can no longer be saved with other procedures. In some instances, a tooth may need to be removed because it’s actually posing a problem to your oral health, as you’ll find with most wisdom teeth.

Why would you need a Tooth Extraction?

Our doctors will perform a comprehensive examination prior to having a tooth removed. X-rays are taken and used in planning the way that the tooth will be removed. Some reasons you’ll need to have a tooth removed include:

  • The tooth has become severely decayed
  • The tooth is loose and cannot be saved
  • The tooth has a fracture or crack that far extends the upper crown
  • The tooth is becoming a problem or may become a problem in the future (wisdom teeth)
  • You’d rather have the tooth pulled as opposed to going for other treatment

What makes you a candidate for a full Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extractions are very common and often use local anesthetic to perform. Because of this, extractions are safe and effective for most patients. In fact, even children who are losing their primary baby teeth can benefit from surgical extractions. We can help determine if you’re a good candidate for an extraction with the help of an exam and consult.

What happens during a typical Tooth Extraction?

You will receive anesthetic of your choice to make the extraction comfortable. For more advanced extractions, like impacted wisdom teeth, we may recommend general anesthesia. The tooth is removed and the area sutured, if it is required. You will bite down on a piece of clean gauze and will be given aftercare instructions. The instructions will help to ensure a quick and easy healing of the surgical site. If you have problems at any time after surgery, we are here to get you in for a post-op appointment. Extractions can eliminate tooth-related pain as well as prevent further problems from developing.
