Root Canal

What is a Root Canal?

Root canals are often necessary when decay has reached the inner pulp of a tooth or if the tooth has cracked, broken or fractured in a way that exposes the pulp. The inner pulp consists of the blood supply and nerves of that particular tooth. When infected with decay or exposed, the tooth can become incredibly painful and be sensitive to hot and cold liquids. A root canal involves the complete removal of this inner pulp.

Why would you need a Root Canal?

Most often, a root canal is needed when decay has been allowed to reach a tooth’s pulp. A small cavity that was ignored years ago can eventually get large enough to infect the entire tooth. You may need a root canal if one of your teeth has broken or cracked, exposing the pulp inside and causing severe pain and sensitivity. Root canals are done within an hour in our office and they help to preserve the overall structure of a tooth without the need for an extraction.

What happens during a typical Root Canal procedure?

A typical root canal often begins by numbing the area to make your time with us more comfortable. The decay is removed from the tooth and will help us to expose the pulp. We use a variety of tools as well as techniques to remove the inner pulp and clean out the canals of the tooth roots. Medicated material is poured into these canals and the hole in the tooth is closed with filling material. The root canal will help to get rid of any pain that you’re experiencing without fully removing the tooth. If you think you may need a root canal or simply want to inquire more about this procedure, call our office and one of our staff members will be more than happy to assist you.
